Taobao haul #2

First Taobao haul of 2012! This is my second order with TaobaoSpree, an agent allowing people outside of China to order off Taobao and have items shipped to them, since most Taobao sellers only ship within China (alternatively you could contact them individually asking to arrange for some international order, but I'm not sure how often people actually can).

In summary, I placed an order on Dec 21, made a few changes to my order, paid item prices + domestic shipping, and finally got my items shipped to Taobaospree on Jan 4. I then paid international shipping to Aus using SAL (which they told me would take ~1 month), and then received my package on Feb 1. Combining the two lots of payments I had to make, the total amount was $161.43USD.

Please check out a more detailed mini-guide to breaking down the Taobaospree invoice (which they send to you after you tell them what items you want to order) at the end of this post. I put it at the bottom to get all the picture reviews done first.

So off we go! *puts excited face on*

Galaxy jacket

price: 159y
colour: orange
size: free
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 171y (~27USD)  <- using the exchange rate TaobaoSpree uses- ie. 1CNY= 0.16USD.

My review:

Well, this was the most expensive item out of the bunch and I've pretty much never seen anything a zip jacket with a galaxy print on it, so I was pretty worried about how it'd turn out in my hands. It could turn out awfully tacky or it could end up being pretty much one of the awesome and unique-looking garments I've ever owned. This whole galaxy craze printed on clothes is Christopher Kane-inspired and I've never seen any cheap knock-offs (Black Milk, Romwe are hardly cheap) so when I see something under $30 USD, I know I'm taking a risk.

However, I was so, so super uber duper elated and relieved when I took this out of its packaging and tried it on! It's just so freakin' gorgeous in real life. It's exactly like the stock photo. The galaxy print is so beautiful and soft- not like a crappy-looking, cheap swirl of colours if you know what I mean.

I also don't know if I just forgot what it looked like (since I placed my order back in late December last year!) but the jacket was a lot sheerer and more delicate than I expected- don't expect it to keep you warm! It's just a beautiful extra layer you can pop over a plain singlet in the warmer seasons.

If I could make any complaints, I'm not really a fan of the straps on either side of the jacket, which you're meant to buckle up together at the front when the jacket's zipped up. I like to wear it open so they kind of just dangle on the side. The two floppy, limp strips of fabric kind of let the beauty of the jacket down. I may cut them off.

Apart from that- the jacket is absolutely gorgeous and exceeds my expectations. I just love the fact that it's so unique. I haven't seen anything like this anywhere!

price: 5.9y
colour: gold
size: free
domestic shipping fee: n/a
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 17.9y (~0.9USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

(worn in the above pictures) This is fantastic as well. Only fits my middle finger, but I expect that with almost every ring. Everything about it is just like the stock photo.

Go to the original item on ASOS right now. See how much it costs? $134 original price? On sale for $73? Now look at how much I paid for this really similar ring on Taobao. Not even a single US dollar. It doesn't get any better value for money than that. You can pick your jaws up off the floor now.

House of Harlow inspired black-plated necklace
price: 7.2y
colour: black
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 19.2y (~3USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

(worn in photos above) The ubiquitous HOH black plated knock-off necklace you see absolutely everywhere nowadays. I thought I had gotten what was pretty much a rock-bottom priced deal, but the other day I found it sold on Ebay for only $2.98USD with free international shipping! Mine is around the same price but I still had to pay extra international shipping fees afterwards. Check out that Ebay link here for anyone who's interested.

My verdict on this knock-off? Yes it's extremely cheap, but it also looks like it. In this case, unlike the ring I just reviewed above, I would prefer purchasing the real thing. The black triangle(ish) pieces also have a tendency to fold over (so the inside gold part shows rather than the outer black) easily- in one of the above photos you can see one triangle folding over. I'm not sure if that's the case with the original House of Harlow necklace, but I'm betting it's much better quality, better designing, and heavier so that wouldn't happen so frequently. However, it is a pretty lovely necklace for only a few dollars- you'd just be feeling self-conscious for the rest of the night trying to fix up your necklace.

(back of the belt)

Black pleated skirt
price: 49y
colour: black
size: free
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 61y (~9.76USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

I've already featured this skirt in most of my item reviews, as it was just something to cover up my bottom half just in case anyone suddenly rocked up at my door (I took these photos infront of the entrance door, which has glass lol) and saw me snapping photos of myself in my underwear o_o So if you want to see more pictures of the skirt, it pops up plenty more times if you keep scrolling down.

What I like most about this skirt is the pleats- not just the little ones, but those big ones that contribute to the flared shape of the skirt. The structure actually stays up pretty well, and wasn't too damaged after being squished into packaging for a month or so. Those pleats create a wonderful swishing effect, which I've tried to capture in my silly little GIF (above) haha.

Other things about the skirt- it's quite short and tight. The tightness I can manage (although it might get really uncomfortable if I have a big meal when I eat out) and as for the shortness, I might wear "safety" shorts underneath.

Metal belt
price: 35y
colour: black (only brown left)
size: free
domestic shipping fee: 10y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 45y (~7.2USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

I absolutely lust over metallic things, and to add a little strip of metal to break up an outfit is perfect for me. However I can easily see the front plate getting scratched. I'd be quite tentative to wear it out in public and expose it to anything that might bump it even the slightest. I can also see it rusting in the near future. I'd probably just try to get as many wears out of it as possible, before it corrodes and gets too damaged.

The belt is just as expected from the stock photo however. I don't particularly like how you can see the two black strips of the elastic belt behind on the sides of the metal- I'd prefer it if the front was purely metal. However it's not so noticeable from afar so overall I'm still pretty happy.

Leopard print clutch
price: 33y (price has changed since my order)
colour: one
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 45y (~7.2USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

Not going to lie, I bought this clutch  mostly because it was cheap- I don't find envelope clutches to be very functional because of how thin they are- you can stuff some thicker things inside but it would lose that flat appearance. I just thought it would be nice to buy into this envelope clutch trend without sacrificing too much money for it, as I don't expect to use it a lot.

I don't really like how there's actually hairs on the leopard print area- it looks kind of cheap in my opinion and I probably overlooked it in the stock photos. However, it's pretty much true to photo. It came a little bent on the bottom right corner, but it's alright as I'd probably be making a few dents in the clutch myself anyway. It also comes with a long strap (inside the bag) but I probably wouldn't use it. This is dirt cheap anyway.

House of Harlow-inspired Arrow bangle
price: 2 x 8.9y
colour: silver, and gold
domestic shipping fee: n/a
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 17.8y (~2.8USD)

Stock picture:

My review:

Oh my goodness. The gold one was almost impossible to put on. I couldn't seem to fit it over my hand, and I couldn't just put it directly on, with my wrist through it. It was also non-stretchable. I eventually got it through over my hand, but not without a struggle and not without red marks. I figured a way to put it on with careful, deliberate twists so that the pointy part of the arrow didn't pierce my skin, as I tried to wriggle my thumb through the opening of the bracelet. You can eventually do it, but it just requires careful movements and it will still be tight.

The silver one was slightly looser. So after I got it over my hand, I put it over the gold bangle since the silver one would stay up my arm higher.

Other than the poor fitting of the gold cuff, I have no complaints. The cuffs look true to stock photo and were extremely good value for money. Once again, this is a knock-off of HOH. The original arrow cuff can be found on ASOS here for $64, on sale. I bought two knock-offs for $1.40USD each.

(back of the shorts)

Apricot shorts with lace trim
price: 39y
colour: apricot
size: free
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 51y (~8.16usd)

Stock picture:

My review:

My biggest peeve about these shorts is that the photos were kind of misleading. The back of the shorts isn't terribly attractive but there was no full back shot on their store website. The focus is on the front, which looks different because they don't have that scrunched up, elastic look at the top. Another thing is that the shorts are actually a pretty thick, and cheap material- like a hoodie. This combined with the elastic at the back makes it even worse- I look like I'm wearing some little Asian kid's shorts. I'm too embarrassed to even show you the full photo of the back, I had to crop it. It just looks so cheap, plus it looks like I have an eternal wedgie.

It would have been much more helpful if these shorts had been modelled, from the front and back. The only nice thing I can say is that the apricot colour is lovely and the lace trim at the bottom is pretty nice too. I might wear this with a long top over it, or give it to my little sister if she doesn't mind.

Anyhoo, the item (and the rest of the stuff in the seller's store, it seems) isn't for sale anymore. I'm pretty sure I have some theories why.

Red wedges
price: 98y
colour: red
size: 37
domestic shipping fee: n/a
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 98y (~15.7usd)

Stock picture:

My review:

These wedges are just fantastic!! The platform heel is so high and the shoes make me feel ridiculously tall. Surprisingly, they are also really comfortable and I feel like I could walk around in them all day. I also love the bright red shade. Pretty decent manufacturing job in my opinion- although you can see the glue in some areas it's not too noticeable. The straps have a little diamante charm thing hanging off them which I'm not really fond of, but it's only small. Super duper happy about these.

5/5

Silver cube bangle
price: 49.9y
colour: silver (B)
domestic shipping fee: 15y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 64.9y (~10.4usd)

Stock picture:

My review:

In hindsight, I realise this was relatively expensive as I had only spent a few dollars for each piece of jewellery in the rest of my order. However I think the stuff in that seller's store were particularly unique, whereas all the House of Harlow knock-offs I got were mass-produced in several different stores. The prices are therefore not as competitive in this store, but I'm still ok with paying $10usd for an item that's pretty damn cool-looking! I'm absolutely smitten with the cube design- I haven't seen anything like this anywhere.
It is a bit clunky and heavy, and does bump against your wristbone every now and then- but for the design alone I'm still happy with this purchase.

5/5

Gold claw bracelet
price: 18.8y
colour: bronze
domestic shipping fee: 12y
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 30.8y (~4.9usd)

Stock picture:

My review:

This is quite tight like the arrow bangles I reviewed above (but at least these open up a bit more!) so you still have to take care putting it on, to not jab your skin with the "claws". After getting it on however this bracelet looks absolutely precious. I just love how it looks like a a set of claws are wrapped around your wrist- super duper adorable in my opinion!

The quality and design of this is fantastic, I have absolutely no complaints.

The original from ASOS is out of stock now, but the link is here and the original price was ~$27usd, on sale later for $17.

House of Harlow inspired abalone necklace
price: 39.8y
colour: one
domestic shipping fee: n/a
total price of item (not incl shipping, service etc fees): 39.8y (~6.4usd)

Stock picture:

My review:

The faux abalone shell design is just incredible! It didn't look as cheap and tacky as I had feared. However I have to say the same thing I said about the other House of Harlow black necklace I reviewed above- the triangle(ish) parts do fold over quite easily and I think you'd be wasting a lot of time trying to fix it up when wearing this out.

I can't seem to find the original on ASOS, but I found it on Nastygal here for $135usd.

4/5

In conclusion:

It's a real bummer that everything seems so cheap when taking into account the item price as well as the domestic shipping costs, both of which are listed on each item's page. What you don't realise is how much international shipping can jack up the entire amount payable. Although domestic shipping is pretty cheap (around 12y or $2usd for each item), in the end everything adds up and you are still essentially paying two lots of shipping- domestic and international. This cumulative effect is bolstered by the extra Paypal and service fees (10% of items with domestic shipping). So I highly recommend, that people don't go absolutely nuts when doing their order and add everything just because they're cheap- because you might eventually build up to a cost that isn't worth it, when taking into account the other fees.

However having said all that- I paid $161.41usd altogether for 13 items, so that's about $12.41usd for each thing. Even if 7 out of those items were only jewellery (another being a clutch, another being a belt), say for example the jewellery only counts for 3 pieces- that's still ~$18 for a pair of shorts, a jacket and a skirt each. I still think it's worthwhile to make an order on Taobao via Taobaospree despite incurring those additional costs, if you can't find anything similar elsewhere, and if you're lucky enough to receive everything as you expected from the photos.

Anyway, I've just provided below a little guide on how to break down the costs you might see in a Taobaospree invoice. I don't know if others using Taobaospree have found deciphering the invoice a total breeze or not, but I thought I'd put up a little guide here anyway because it's not totally straightforward.

After you tell them what you want to order (you can download their order form here or simply send it within the body of an email)- they will typically send you an Excel file which contains all the relevant costs, with a Final balance at the bottom. That final balance is the first payment you have to make to them. It includes:
  • total cost of all items, plus their domestic shipping fees (if any)
  • service fee for using Taobaospree
  • Paypal fee (if applicable)

________________Taobao Sellers --> Taobao Spree________________

(by the way, please don't try calculating the total prices of the items to make them add up to ¥649.40, I deliberately cut off some items on my invoice (see how it jumps from row 25-34) to get down to the basics for this mini-guide! :))

The spreadsheet can look a little intimidating and complex at first, unless you're only concerned with knowing what you have to pay and in that case the Final Balance figure is all that matters. However for others, like me, I'd be interested to know exactly where all the extra fees are adding up and why the final balance isn't/is close to what I expected.

This is how the figures are calculated:

(refer to the red numbers I've marked from 1) to 6) on the above screenshot image!)

POINT 1) on the invoice:
Add up all the prices of each item, inclusive of their local shipping (from the Taobao seller to the Taobao agent). The total for my order was ¥649.40.

Item price + local shipping = total price in Chinese Yuan (¥649.40 in my example)

POINT 2) on the invoice:

(total price in Chinese Yuan) x 0.16 = total price in USD (USD 103.90 in my example, exchange rate of 1cny = 0.16usd)

POINT 3) on the invoice:

total price in USD x 0.1 = service fee in USD (USD 10.39 in my example)

POINT 4) on the invoice:

total price in USD + service fee in USD (USD 114.29 in my example)

POINT 5) on the invoice:

Paying by Paypal, incurs a fee of 4% of the total amount, plus an extra 0.3USD. So to get the total amount inclusive of Paypal fees:

(total price in USD + service fee in USD) x [(1.04) + 0.3USD] = FINAL BALANCE (USD 119.17 in my example)

POINT 6) on the invoice:

FINAL BALANCE (USD 119.17 in my example)

I then paid the final balance, and they sent me an email saying that they had already ordered all the items. They told me that they would inform me when everything had been received by them.

When I received that notification, they also told me how much shipping would be to Australia. At first they told me 48.75USD for about 3kg, via EMS (which would take about a week). I thought that was really steep and asked them for any cheaper options, and they told offered SAL, which was $42.26USD - which would take about a month. I opted for that one, making the second payment to Taobaospree. The total in the end combining both lots of payments, was $161.43USD.

Hope the review from Taobao and my guide to the invoice have been helpful :)

  1. I wish I had the guts to buy so many items from the internet. The idea still scares me even though I've tried it once. You got so much!!!!!!!! The galaxy thing is so in right now! It's everywhere! But my favourite would have to be the black flowy skirt... I've been seeing it a lot lately too & it gives me that feminine look that I like. I haven't seen it in stores though or maybe I just haven't been looking properly?

  2. Wow I didn't know that onlineshop. It's very cheap, isn't it. Maybe I'll manage to order there too. Just have to find out how to translate everything properly =) Love the House Of Harlow accessories.

  5. Wow, that does seem complicated! The necklaces do look gorgeous even if they are cheaply made and fold up. I may have to check out that ebay link. :) And man, I can see in your photos where those arrow bracelets dug into your skin! Not good! And those shorts are cute from the front so maybe a longer jacket or shirt can cover up the back. :) Love the black skirt and metal belt! Those are super cute! <3

  7. Izzy you have amazing taste! I just about adore all the jewelry you got especially the arrow and claw bracelets. It's a shame about the shorts, those were my next favorite thing but the back does look quite unattractive but I suppose a long loose top can cover that.

The red wedges are also stunning, there is nothing I like more that a pair of comfy wedges. Overall nice haul and price you paid for everything. I use to use an agent when I shopped on Y!J auctions but the fees really do add up :P

  9. How do you know what size you are for shoes? I ordered from Taobao once and the shoes were WAY too big >< So disappointed now they're rotting in my closet :[

    1. I'm usually size 37 (European), sometimes 36. In Australian sizes I usually get 7, sometimes 6.5. Everytime I've ordered size 37 from Chinese wholesale sites, they've fit perfectly. Sometimes when I've ordered 37 (or its equivalent) from Gmarket or other Western shoe online stores, they've been too small or too big.
it sucks to hear that they didn't fit properly! :( I hate it when that happens. you could always try selling them, if they're unworn! :)

    2. oh i was reading your answer..i think i'm understanding better how its is...cause the shoes size carts in the internet are different from each other >.< so everyone gets confused about it! Well, i saw another review and the girl said that she is 4.5 US and 34/35 European and she gets 34 from Chinese Sites...so i presume that mine is between 39/40 my US size is 8.5/9 =) hope so! thanks 4 the review! amazing stuffs! Specially the bracelet and necklace!

sorry my bad english im from Brazil XD

  10. Hi!

Came across your blog while looking up Taobao hauls and discovered Gmarket thanks to you!!! Was wondering if you could share where is the quality of clothes better: Taobao, Gmarket, ASOS? I can't wear Forever New level quality, feel it's too thin. I'm looking out for H&M and above quality. Gmarket is looking the closest to ASOS...what has your experience been?

    Thanks a lot!
    Emma.

    1. Hi Emma! I think the order of quality in GENERAL goes like this (from worst to best quality): Taobao, Gmarket, ASOS. Which makes sense, since in general the ranking is probably the same from cheapest to dearest. With Taobao you look out for the sellers with high Crown and diamond rankings, but even for those stores there's a decent chance some stuff might be poor quality and what you get mightn't be exactly what is depicted in the stock photos. The items on Taobao are like what's sold on other Asian wholesale websites, where some have had pretty bad experiences before- eg due to a really poor attempt to replicate the stock photo the garment fits all wrong, things out of proportion etc. I would say I was pretty lucky with this haul, but then I mostly got accessories (especially jewellery), and from what I've noticed most people's complaints are about actual clothes.

Gmarket's overall quality is better than Taobao, but I have definitely received some duds before! However I think the risk of receiving something totally unexpected is minimised by the fact that a lot of (the popular ones, at least) sellers on GM have their own models wearing all the garments.

And I expect ASOS quality overall to be the best out of the three- because they have a decent range of reputable brands people already know and trust. I personally don't have much experience myself with a lot of their brands though. I've mainly bought stuff from their in-house brand because it's relatively cheap, and the quality is pretty high and consistent.

I don't have any experience with H&M (we don't have one in Australia) so I'm not sure if I'd put it in between the standards of Gmarket and ASOS, or higher than ASOS. However as I've said in the first paragraph- the order of quality goes from Taobao, Gmarket then ASOS which also corresponds with overall price (lowest to highest). So if quality is your biggest concern I'd stick to ASOS but if you're willing to take a bit of a risk, try GM and TB- it's possible to find some amazingly cheap gems there but I can't guarantee it!

      hope that helps xx

  11. Hi there,

Love your blog! Btw, just letting you know that the claw bracelet is probably 'inspired' from Pamela Love's talon claw bangle and the cube bracelet is again, probably 'inspired' from Cheap Monday's cube bracelet :)
The wedges are gorgeous, I've been looking for a pair that have a decent height with an ankle strap and those seem perfect!
Thanks heaps for posting the taobao tutorial, I've always been looking to order from there because everything seems so cheap so I might give taobaospree a try!

  29. Oh my god, I really wanna do some online shopping after seeing your post! I've always wanted to buy from taobao and english gmarket but I've never had the chance :( Other than buying from gmarket,wholesale7 and taobao, what other online sites do you buy your clothes from? :) x

    1. Hi Crystal!

haha why don't you have the chance to? Hmm well recently I'm only liking those three online sites. I used to buy a lot from Zipia.net, but their style has started to become more boring and more expensive- plus their minimum order remains at $300usd. I also used to buy from Yesstyle quite often, but after discovering more online websites (such as Taobao) I realised what a huge mark-up they place on their clothes when I constantly see the exact same items for a fraction of the price, elsewhere. I also still like Western online stores such as ASOS, Urban Outfitters and Nastygal- although I mostly do "window" shopping on them and will only place an order if I REALLY super duper liked something. Otherwise, I try to resist because they do tend to be a bit pricier than the Asian websites I frequent. If I had an unlimited budget however, I would certainly be doing a LOT of damage on those websites, probably more than Taobao, Gmarket etc. haha :P

  30. I love shopping on taobao too!! There are always lots of good finds on them but my shipping agent charges so much more compared to taobaospree. I think the last time I placed an order, service fees and shipping cost me over a hundred dollars (not inclusive of the price of the items I bought >_____<)

no way! that sounds ridiculous. What agent was that? Truth be told I didn't do much research on any agents, I just picked out the one that was at the top of my Google search and thought oh it must be trustworthy and competitively-priced if it's at the top. Oh well, lesson learnt now! :P I hope you still got away with some cute items in your haul though! :)

  31. omg, thanks you so much for this review!!!! Ever since my cousin in China showed me this site, I have been bookmarking stuff forever in the hope that i can get them! And I searched for Taobao agents on the Internet but I didn't know if I can trust them enough.. since there were some bad reviews. In the end, I just sent all the links of the stuff that I wanted to my cousin and my dad, who went back to China for the new years, is bringing everything back to me! haha :) But with this, I think I just might try it out! Unless I wait for my mom to go to China and bring everything back to me :)

Love your purchases, especially the shoes!!

    1. haha you're just like me! I discovered Taobao back in 2007 and I was just torturing myself browsing through all the wonderful items and never being able to buy anything. I have some relatives in China too, but I chickened out asking them to order stuff for me because I felt so bad.
Haha either way, I can't wait to see what your purchase from Taobao! It would be amazing if everyone could just bring the stuff to you- save heaps on shipping costs! :P

  33. This is so interesting to read! I always wanted to order something from Taobao, but since I really like to see for myself if the quality is good I'm to chicken to actually do it.
In general I don't like online shopping, because I can't try on the stuff beforehand :p

I like your blog btw, so I'm following ^^

  34. Awesome shopping finds!! You make me want to go shopping now! Does Taobao have English translation on their website and do they ship to US?

You have a great blog (found you from your comment on Chictopia) and now I'm following. Keep up with your reviews! You're very detailed & descriptive!

    1. Hi Kimberly! :) I'm glad I encouraged you to go on a shopping spree! (sorry to your wallet though :() Taobao does not have an English version; you may want to however use Google translate on the Chrome browser. Most Taobao sellers are not willing to ship overseas and that's why I had to use an agent (Taobaospree)- to get all the stuff sent to them in China, and then send everything to me.

I'm following you now too hon :) and thankyou! xx

  42. Hello Izzy! :D I love your blog I wish I could go online shopping as much as you haha. Does the House of Hallow(s) necklaces feel like real leather or is it cheap feeling?
Also, could you please help me decide on a pair of shorts... im looking for practical ones (can wear for any occasion and go with everything)

    1. Light Grey: http://sugarfun.cafe24.com/c/cp296/cp296.html
    2. Pink: http://pp0523535.imghost.cafe24.com/110624-8/sls.html (not sure about pink going with everything)

    2. hey there :)

the HOH knock-off necklace I got was a take on the original black resin one, not the leather one. So it's actually shiny and plastic and feels a little bit cheap, but it doesn't bother me too much.

All of those shorts are so lovely! I actually like the second one (pink) the most but for practicality, I would probably go for the third one (pink). Because it's a darker, more of a salmon pink you would be able to wear it during all seasons, and you could pair it with stockings for the colder days. Although the other shade of pink is really lovely you might have a hard time wearing it with darker shades during winter. The design of the first pair of shorts (grey) is nice but I'm not really a fan of grey- I think they would make every outfit look a little more mature and would give it a corporate look. These are just my opinions though! :P

      hope that helps,
      xx Izzy

  53. very helpful post, especially with the TaoBaoSpree tutorial at the end. i'm about to make to first (VERY large) order through them and couldn't for the life of me figure out how they calculated their costs. and me being slow, it took a while to work out that I had to convert the total on my invoice from Chinese Yuan RMB to HKD - and i was about to fire off an email to them asking if they miscalculated!

btw the red heels are gorgeous. i don't even wear heels, but i'm gonna have to check those out for next time. hopefully they'll still be around
